For owner-operators

Owner-operators: one truck, so do the math yourself first

Our audit is designed for fleets of about 5 to 15 trucks, and we say so plainly. If you run one or two trucks, the free tools below give you most of the answer without sending anyone a file.

Why the quoted rate is not your rate

With one truck, empty miles and fuel decide your month. The quoted rate per loaded mile hides both.

The calculators below take you from the first number to the last one in four steps, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Rate per mile three ways for the same loadThree horizontal bars for one invented load: $3.02 per loaded mile, $2.66 per total mile, and a lower net figure after costs. Per loaded milePer all mileNet per all mile $3.02 $2.66 $1.64 $1,850 / 612 loaded mi, 83 empty mi, $710 load costs. EXAMPLE VALUES
Same load, three honest answers. The first is what a broker quotes. The second counts the 83 empty miles the truck also drove. The third takes out $710 of invented fuel, tolls and driver pay first: ($1,850 - $710) / 695 miles. Use your own numbers in the cost per mile tool.

Do this first

Four calculators, in this order

  1. Know your cost per mile

Add a month of costs and miles. Include the empty miles. Everything else builds on this number. Cost per mile

  2. Set a floor for each load

Work out the lowest rate per loaded mile that still pays you, including the empty miles to the pickup. Minimum rate

  3. Check the load you just ran

Revenue minus fuel, driver pay and per-mile costs, with empty miles counted. Load profit

  4. Bill the wait

If you sat at a dock past free time, count the billable hours. Detention

When it is still worth asking us

  • You plan to add trucks and want a baseline before you do.
  • You have a lot of unpaid invoices past 30 days and no time to chase them.
  • You think you are not being paid for detention, and want your own numbers.

Tell us your size in the form. If the audit is not a fit, we will say so and point you to the tools.

What we will not do

  • Sell you a package that does not fit one truck.
  • Act as your dispatcher or find you loads. We are not a broker or dispatcher.
  • Quote market rates. We do not have live freight rates.

Questions

Is the free audit available to one truck?

You can ask. It is built for larger fleets, so the report is most useful with more loads. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth your time.

Do the tools send my numbers anywhere?

No. The calculators run in your browser and send nothing.
