All 80 ports with data on this border total 5,184,725 trucks in the 12 months.
What this number means
- The busiest Mexico port, Laredo, carries 39% of that border's truck crossings. Traffic is concentrated, so a few crossings set the pace for the lane.
- The busiest Canada port, Detroit, Michigan, had 1,231,211 trucks, 24% of the Canada border total.
- The counts are trucks entering the U.S. They do not say how long a truck waited, whether it was loaded, or who hauled it.
What to do about it
- If you run a cross-border lane, price the border port you really use, not the border as a whole. The ports in the table are the ones where drivers are most likely to queue.
- Compare the 12-month change for your port with the change in your own loads on that lane. If traffic is rising and your loads are not, you may be losing share.
- Ask your broker which port a quoted rate assumes, and what it includes for waiting time at the crossing.
Questions
Do these numbers include empty trucks?
The data counts truck crossings. It does not separate loaded from empty trucks.
Does this show outbound traffic?
No. The BTS series counts inbound crossings into the United States only.
How current is it?
The latest month in the file is August 2026. BTS publishes with a delay, so the newest weeks are not here.
