This is a region price repeated for each state in it. EIA publishes only the U.S., PADD regions and California in this series. A state can sit well above or below its region. Regions follow the EIA PADD definition.

What this number means

  • The number is the average pump price for on-highway diesel in a region for one week. It follows the market, not your card.
  • The West Coast and California are far above the middle of the country. The gap between regions in this file is $2.383 per gallon.
  • A fuel surcharge schedule that uses a different index or a different week will not match this table.

What to do about it

  • Open the rate confirmation and find which index and which week set the surcharge. Compare it with the row for your region.
  • Price your fuel: a 10 cent move is about one cent per mile at 10 mpg. The scenario below turns it into monthly dollars for your trucks.
  • See what a lane costs to run with this diesel price on the freight corridors page.

How carriers use a diesel average

  • To check a fuel surcharge line. If a rate confirmation ties the surcharge to a published weekly average, compare the average for the right week and region with the one used on the invoice. The rate con versus invoice guide shows how.
  • To sanity-check your own fuel cost. A large gap between your pump price and the regional average is worth a look, though fuel cards, discounts and location explain a lot of it.
  • To test a budget. The scenario above shows what a few cents more per gallon does to monthly fuel spend for a fleet of a given size.

What it does not tell you

  • What your cards or contracts pay per gallon.
  • What any lane, broker or load pays.
  • What the price will be next week.

The cashflow simulator starts its fuel line from this same U.S. number: cashflow scenario simulator.

Questions

Why is the price higher than what I see on the road?

This is the figure published in the EIA snapshot for the regions shown. Prices vary by state, station and card discount. This page does not claim to match any pump.

How often is it updated?

EIA publishes weekly. This page was built from the EIA API series retrieved Oct 9, 2026, 12:03 UTC and does not refresh by itself.

Can I use it for a fuel surcharge dispute?

It can serve as a dated reference. Your rate confirmation decides which index and which week apply.
