Open data atlas

Pages across the site draw on 19 official datasets. Each row says who publishes it, under what licence, for what period, when we fetched it and what it cannot tell you. We read the licence from the dataset metadata. Where a dataset states no licence we say so, and treat it as U.S. government data that is publicly available without a key. Sources we could not reach are listed at the bottom, so nobody has to guess.

What this number means

  • Open does not mean fresh. The truck parking file is from a 2015 survey. The bridge file is from June 2025. The diesel series is weekly.
  • Open does not mean a licence. Several FMCSA datasets state no licence. We treat them as U.S. government data and use only aggregates.
  • Official does not mean complete. The limits column is where each file stops being useful.
  • Where a figure is missing the pages say "no data". They do not fill the gap with a guess.

What to do about it

  • Before you quote a number from these pages, check the retrieval date and the refresh cycle in the table.
  • If you need a figure for a contract, a claim or a filing, go to the publisher and use the link on the page. This site is a reading aid.
  • Check the freshness of any number you carry yourself with the checker below.
  • Tell us if a source has moved or changed. A stale link is a bug.

Is the number you hold still current?

Pick the dataset your figure came from and the date of your figure. The checker compares it with how often the source refreshes.

Refresh cycles missed by your figure

Formula: today minus your date, divided by the typical refresh interval of the source. The example numbers are invented placeholders. Replace them with yours.

How we handle open data

  • Only aggregates of FMCSA files are stored. No carrier record is kept.
  • No API key is read, printed or stored. The EIA API v2 needs a key that this build did not have, so the public EIA history files are used.
  • Every data file has a retrieval time in UTC, a licence line and a limitations line.
  • When a fetch is blocked we log it here and the page does not use it.

What we do not do

  • Name, rank or score a carrier or broker.
  • Present a regional number as a city or lane number.
  • Present history as a forecast.
  • Fill a gap with an estimate. A gap reads "no data".
