USDOT carrier lookup
Type a USDOT number or the start of a company name. You get size, authority age, last filing date and 24-month roadside out-of-service counts for 307,785 active for-hire property carriers with 1 to 50 power units, and a plain-English reading of what each field does and does not tell you. The data is a copy dated Oct 9, 2026. The official record is always SAFER.
Data note
- Data date. Copy built Oct 9, 2026 UTC. Census file last updated by FMCSA Oct 9, 2026, authority file Oct 8, 2026, inspection summary Sep 13, 2026. Anything that changed since is not here.
- Who is in it. Census status active, 1 to 50 power units, and an active common or contract property authority at the data date. Brokers, private fleets, passenger carriers and carriers over 50 trucks are not in it. The census file lists 353,334 USDOT numbers with active property authority before the size filter.
- What is shown. USDOT number, legal name, state, power units, drivers, authority type and grant month, MCS-150 month, and 24-month inspection and out-of-service counts. Phone, email, street address, city, officer names and trade names are not stored.
- Terms. The data.transportation.gov dataset pages state no licence. The terms for mass commercial use of FMCSA data are under legal review, so this page shows public identifiers and counts, labels the date, and sends you to SAFER for the record of truth.
- Not a rating. Nothing here is an FMCSA safety rating, an insurance check, or advice about hiring a carrier.
Reading the numbers: what the whole index looks like
These pooled figures are computed from this index only. They are not the FMCSA national averages and they cover carriers that were inspected at least once in the 24-month window.
| Size band | Carriers inspected | Vehicle OOS share | Driver OOS share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 power units | 164,151 | 26.9% | 10.2% |
| 5 to 15 power units | 38,581 | 25.3% | 6.7% |
| 16 to 50 power units | 15,112 | 21.8% | 4.2% |
| All 1 to 50 | 217,844 | 24.8% | 7.2% |
Vehicle OOS share = vehicle inspections with an out-of-service order divided by vehicle inspections. Driver OOS share is the same for driver inspections. Median authority age in the index is 5.8 years. 7.2% of records have an MCS-150 older than 24 months or no usable date, so size figures are often stale. File: data/fmcsa_usdot_index_meta.json.
How to read a record, in four lines
- Active authority means FMCSA lists the operating authority as in force. It does not say the insurance is current today or that the carrier is any good.
- Authority age is the time since the oldest grant still in force. New is not bad, but it is thin history.
- Power units and drivers are self-reported on the MCS-150, which carriers must refresh every 24 months under 49 CFR 390.201(d).
- Out-of-service shares are roadside outcomes over 24 months. With under about 10 inspections one event swings the rate; the tool shows a plausible range. Inspectors target trucks, so a high share can reflect targeting.
