Official data, by month
Freight season planner
Pick a state. The heatmap shows which months diesel has usually been cheaper or dearer in its EIA region, and in which months winter, flood, wind and heat or fire events were most often recorded there. Past patterns, not a forecast. Download the table as CSV with sources in the header.

| Month | Diesel index (100 = year average, region) | Winter event-days | Flood event-days | Wind event-days | Heat or fire event-days |
|---|
Diesel index: median over full years of the month's mean EIA weekly retail price divided by that year's mean, times 100; blue cells are cheaper than average, orange dearer. Event-days: mean days a month with at least one recorded event of that group, averaged over the years shown; shading is relative to the state's own worst month for that column, so compare within a column, not across states. Colour is backed by the numbers in every cell. FAF6 has no monthly split, so it appears only in the sentence above the table.
How to read it
- Diesel is regional and weekly. A month below 100 has usually been cheaper than the year's average, which matters if you can choose when to fill a tank or sign a fuel contract.
- Weather columns count recorded event-days, not delay hours. A state with many climates (Texas, California) blurs corridors, so use them as a prompt to look at your lane, not as a closure forecast.
- Build slack into your schedule in the months that are dark in the weather columns, and quote with the diesel index in mind.
Compare two states at once on the lane scorecard, or see regional diesel in depth on diesel seasonality and the weather calendar.
