Broker risk radar: what the public register says about the people you book with
The FMCSA register lists 23,797 active freight broker authority records. 591 of them (2.5%) carry a revocation notice and 89 (0.37%) show no broker bond on file. Among all authority records granted in 2023, 49.1% were revoked inside 24 months. This page shows the population, not any one company. It never names a broker or carrier.

Data runs through April 2026
The legacy FMCSA licensing files behind this page stop in May 2026 and the last complete month is April 2026. Nothing newer is in them, although the portal shows a later update date. Every monthly count below is "through April 2026". The status figures (active, pending, bond on file) are the register as of the files, not today. Out-of-service orders come from a separate file that runs to September 2026. A fall at the end of a chart is the file ending, not revocations stopping.
The population in numbers
Each figure counts authority records on the register, not companies. One company can hold more than one record.
Active authority records (carriers and brokers)
384,803
MC dockets with active common, contract or broker authority.
Active broker records
23,797
591 with a revocation pending (2.5%).
Median age of an active authority
6.0 years
p25 2.8, p75 13.0 years since the grant.
Revocation orders, 12 months to April 2026
78,364
Orders that took effect in complete months.
Revocations and new grants by month
Revocation orders that took effect each month next to new operating authority granted. Complete months only, January 2023 to April 2026.
Counts per month from the Revocation file (effective date) and the authority history file (date served). Revocations are gross: authority can be reinstated later.
How old is the authority you book with?
Years since the grant for 384,492 active records. 18.7% are under two years old.
Age is years since the earliest still-in-force grant, as of Oct 9, 2026. A young authority is not a bad one. It is one with a shorter track record you can check.
How many new authorities last two years?
Share of records first granted in each year that received an involuntary revocation within 24 months. The range runs from 35.3% (2020) to 49.1% (2023).
Grant years 2024, 2025 are left out: 24 months have not passed. A revocation can be cured later, see the table.

Involuntary revocation orders only. "Not active now" removes records that were revoked and later became active again: 94,542 records across all years. Records, not companies: one USDOT can hold several MC records.
Broker authority by state
Darker states have a larger share of active broker authority records with a revocation pending. States with fewer than 30 active broker records show no share. Click a state or a table row.

State is the business-address state on the record, not where loads move. The range across states with enough records runs from 0.0% (Maine) to 5.1% (New Mexico). It reflects where firms register, not how careful they are.
Insurance filings with a cancellation date
Filings on the register that already carry a cancellation effective date. That is a notice on file, not a lapse.
| Filing type | Filings | With a cancellation date | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMC-91X (liability, BIPD) | 392,700 | 20,875 | 5.3% |
| BMC-34 (cargo) | 35,968 | 307 | 0.9% |

| BMC-91 (liability, BIPD) | 5,414 | 108 | 2.0% |
| BMC-85 (trust fund) | 3,072 | 75 | 2.4% |

Active and pending filings only. Dates in the past mean the filing is still on the register. A replacement filing may already exist. Nationally, 1,991 active authority records (0.57%) show liability cover on file below the required minimum. Insurance lapse is not published as a state rate. Proxy: share of active-authority MC dockets whose BIPD on file is below the required minimum (bipd_file < min_cov_amount). Includes filing lag; not proof the carrier is uninsured.
Out-of-service orders: the reasons
The file holds 401,862 orders; 91,976 are active. 90.1% are new-entrant revocations. Complete months to September 2026.
| Reason given by FMCSA | Orders issued 2023 | Orders issued 2024 | Orders issued 2025 | All years in file |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Entrant Revoked - Refusal of Audit/No Contact | 35,627 | 30,246 | 23,846 | 313,769 |
| New Entrant Revoked - Failure of Safety Audit | 2,325 | 2,079 | 1,544 | 43,405 |
| 90 day failure to pay fine | 1,282 | 1,461 | 285 | 24,987 |
| Unsatisfactory = Unfit | 535 | 521 | 118 | 11,199 |

| Denial of Access | 320 | 380 | 275 | 2,362 |
Orders, not distinct carriers. Reasons are FMCSA wording. Full years only.
What to do tomorrow
Pull the authority status of the next broker you book with
Use the FMCSA licensing and insurance site and write down the date you checked. Active authority, a broker bond (BMC-84 or BMC-85) on file, and no revocation notice are the three things to see.
Note the grant date
A short track record is a reason to check more, not a reason to refuse. About 18.7% of active records are under two years old.
Look at your own payment history with that broker
Your invoices say more about how a broker pays you than any public file. Sort your last 20 loads by days to pay.
Keep a dated screenshot of each check
If a dispute starts, you can show what the register said when you accepted the load.
Questions
Is this a list of risky brokers?
No. It counts records on a public register and names nobody. It is not a score, a ranking or a recommendation about any firm.
Why does the page end in April 2026?
The legacy FMCSA files used here contain nothing newer than May 2026. We left out the incomplete end of the file rather than draw a false drop.
Does a pending revocation mean the broker will not pay?
No. A notice can be resolved, for example by a new insurance or bond filing. The register does not give the reason, so this page does not either.
Can I look up one broker here?
No. Aggregates only. To check a firm, use the FMCSA licensing and insurance site and your own payment records.
Is the data legally cleared for commercial use?
The datasets state no licence in their metadata and are treated as U.S. government data under a legal review that is still open. Aggregates only are stored.
