Data freshness board: how old is every number on this site?

Public trucking data is published on different clocks: some every week, some once a year, some frozen in a 2015 survey. This board lists every dataset we use, where it came from, when we last fetched it, how old the data inside is, what it is used for and where it stops being useful. The dates are read from our own files, not typed by hand.

Status at a glance

  • Fresh 26
  • Snapshot 1
  • Aging 0
  • Stale 0
  • Historical by design 3

Counts update in your browser from the retrieval dates below. They were last computed on the server on Oct 9, 2026. A chip reads the age of our copy against our own shelf life. It does not say how old the data inside the copy is. For that, read the vintage column.

Shelf life is our rule, not the publisher's

Shelf life is the number of days after which we consider a copy worth re-fetching. It is our own rule of thumb, set per dataset. Fresh means inside the shelf life, aging means up to twice that, stale means older. Snapshots of fast-moving data such as weather alerts are labelled snapshot and never shown as live.

Every dataset, its dates and its limits

Retrieval times are UTC, written into each file when it was fetched. Data vintage comes from the file itself: the dataset's own update stamp, its newest period, or its reference year.

On Oct 9, 2026, 16:39 UTC we probed 17 public data services from our server. 3 refused or rejected the request. We list them because a data source you cannot reach is a data source you cannot refresh.

A 403 or 401 means the service refused this request from our server or this credential. It does not mean the data is bad. Rows marked "not used for any page here" are services we checked but have no data from on the site. The WZDx work-zone registry answered with code 200 in the same check, but we have not fetched any work-zone data, so it feeds nothing on the site.

How to read stale data

  1. Two clocks, not one

Every dataset has a retrieval date (when we fetched it) and a vintage (what period the numbers describe). A bridge file fetched on Oct 9, 2026 describes bridges as of June 20, 2025, about 16 months earlier. A fresh copy of old data is still old data.

  2. The source may be older than our fetch

The FMCSA safety measurement file we use was last updated by FMCSA on Sep 13, 2026, although we fetched it on Oct 9, 2026. Nothing we do can make it newer than the publisher's last update.

  3. Match the clock to the decision

Weather alerts are a one-hour fact. Diesel is a one-week fact. Wages and bridges are one-year facts. A diesel price from last week is fine to plan a month. Last week's alert is useless for today's dispatch.

  4. Historical is not stale

Freight flows for 2022 and the 2014 to 2015 parking survey will never be refreshed. They are labelled historical so no one reads them as current. Use them for shape and scale, not for today's capacity.

  5. Preliminary numbers move

The newest month in BLS and FRED series is preliminary and can be revised. A jump in the last point of a chart is a reason to wait for the next release before acting.

  6. When in doubt, open the source

Every row links to the publisher. If a decision costs real money, compare our number with the live source first. We show the retrieval date so you know how far behind we can be.

What we do about it

  • A number reaches a page only if it traces to a file with a retrieval date. No source, no number, and the page says "no data".
  • Snapshots show their retrieval time and carry a "not live" line. Historical data is labelled historical.
  • The retrieval date is written into the file at fetch time by the fetch script. This page reads it from there, and so does every page that shows a snapshot.
  • Aggregates only for FMCSA files. We keep counts, not carrier records, and the licence status of each dataset is shown, including where the publisher states none.
  • Services that refused our connection check are listed above, not hidden.

What this board does not cover

  • Your own data. Numbers you enter in a calculator stay in your browser and are not stored.
  • Live feeds. We do not run live traffic, live weather or live freight rates on this site.
  • Datasets we have probed but not fetched, such as the WZDx work-zone feed registry.

Browse the data itself on the open data atlas, or use it in state-to-state lane cost and pay or wait.

Questions

What does a "Stale" chip mean?

Our copy is older than twice its shelf life. The numbers are not wrong for the date they describe, but they may not describe today. Treat them as history and check the source before relying on them.

Why is a fresh dataset shown with an old vintage?

Because we fetched it recently but the publisher has not released newer data. The vintage column tells you how old the numbers inside are.

Why are some datasets "historical by design"?

They describe a fixed year, such as the 2022 Freight Analysis Framework or the 2014 to 2015 parking survey. There is nothing newer to fetch, so a refresh date would mislead.

Do you show live data anywhere?

No. Everything is a dated copy of a public file, and snapshots are labelled as snapshots.

Where do the dates on this page come from?

From the files themselves: the retrieval time the fetch script wrote, the publisher's own update stamp where it provides one, and the newest period inside the data. Where a file has no such field, the page says so.

Can I use this data myself?

Most sources are U.S. government works. Licence notes are in the table. The FMCSA datasets state no licence in their metadata, and mass commercial reuse of them is under legal review on our side, so we publish aggregates and public identifiers only.
