Layover pay calculator
A layover is when a driver is held overnight or for a full day because of the shipper or receiver, not because of the driver. Some rate confirmations pay a fixed amount per layover. Many say nothing. This tool counts periods from the wording you give it.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Example numbers are invented (EXAMPLE VALUES). This is a calculator, not financial, tax or legal advice.
The formula
if hours held <= start: periods = 0 else: periods = 1 + floor((hours held - start) / block) amount = periods x amount per period
Worked example (invented)
Held 52 hours. Layover starts after 24, each extra period is 24 hours, and the amount is $150. Periods: 1 + floor(28 / 24) = 2. Amount: $300.00.
That is one common way to write it. Yours may count calendar days, or a flat amount for any hold, or nothing at all.
Do not double bill
- If detention was already paid for part of the same hold, a layover for the same hours is the kind of overlap a broker will push back on.
- A hold caused by your own late arrival, a breakdown or the driver's hours usually is not a layover.
- Written proof matters: the message that moved the appointment, with its time, and the gate times.

Questions
Is there a legal layover rate?
No federal rule sets one. It is whatever your agreement says. If it says nothing, you can ask, but there may be nothing you are owed.
What about TONU?
Truck ordered not used is a separate charge for a cancelled load. See the accessorial recovery guide.
Formula table
| Quantity | Formula | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Periods | 0 if held <= start, else 1 + floor((held - start) / block) | One common wording; yours may differ. |
| Amount | periods x amount per period | From the rate confirmation. |
What this means for you
A layover is a separate charge from detention. Check the wording before you bill both for the same hours. The chart compares the hours held against when layover starts, so you can see how close a hold came to the threshold.
