Lumper fee reimbursement check

A lumper is a third-party unloading service some warehouses require. The driver pays it, then the carrier asks the broker to reimburse it. This tool finds the gap.

This load
The amount on the receipt.
Fuel-card or transfer fee. Optional.
Zero if nothing yet.
Optional. Shows the lumper as a share of the load.
Optional scale
Optional scenario.

The formulas

paid out = lumper receipt + fees on top gap = paid out - reimbursed share of load = gap / load rate scenario = gap x loads per month (x 12 for a year)

The last line is a scenario for scale. It assumes every load looks like this one, which it will not. Use it to decide whether the process is worth fixing, not as a prediction.

Why lumper money gets lost

  • No approval before the unload. The broker says the receiver never asked for a lumper, or that nobody approved it.
  • No receipt, or a bad photo. The receipt is the claim.
  • Fees nobody counted. The card or transfer fee is a real cost the receipt does not show.
  • Lumper not on the invoice. The broker pays what the invoice says.

Next steps are in the accessorial recovery guide. The rate confirmation usually says whether lumper is reimbursed and with what proof, so read it before the load.

Questions

Should I pay a lumper without approval?

That is your call, and sometimes the load cannot be unloaded without it. If you do, write down who told you and when. Then ask for approval by message at once, so there is a record.

Does the audit look for lumper gaps?

Yes, when your file has receipt amounts. See revenue recovery.

Worked example (invented numbers)

Receipt $225.00, card fee $12.00, nothing reimbursed. Paid out $237.00, gap $237.00. On a $2,640 load that is 9.0%. If 4 loads a month look like this the scenario is $948.00 a month, $11,376.00 over 12 months.

What this means for you

The gap is cash you advanced and did not get back. Two habits close most of it: get written approval before the unload, and put the receipt and the fee on the invoice the same day.
